Will a factory accept an order of only 500 pieces?
A factory built for short runs will — 500 pcs per design is our standard minimum, and the line is set up for 500-pc batches rather than for mass runs interrupted by small jobs. A large plant may technically accept the order, but it usually applies a minimum run fee below 2,000 pcs and schedules the job around its mass production, which is where both the surcharge and the delay come from.
Why is a large factory more expensive for small batches?
Fixed cost. A die and a set of plates cost the same whether you print 500 or 50,000 pcs, and a large factory bills that setup at $200–500 per job instead of absorbing it over a long run. Add a high minimum run fee below 2,000 pcs and overheads such as admin, legal and real estate embedded in the unit price, and the gap at 500–2,000 pcs comes mostly from structure — not from paper or labour.
Can a mid-sized factory match a large factory on quality?
On process control, yes: IQC, IPQC and FQC gates, finished-goods sampling to ISO 2859-1 general inspection level II at AQL 1.0 or 2.5, ΔE≤2 colour accuracy and ±0.5 mm die-cutting tolerance are all achievable on a 5,000 m² floor with a Heidelberg CD102 press. Where a large factory genuinely leads is capacity for very large single runs — if you need container-load volumes, that advantage is real. Quality systems are not a function of floor area.
Are waived die and plate fees real?
They are a pricing structure, not a discount trick. A factory that runs short orders constantly buys plates and dies in volumes that let it absorb the setup into 500–1,000 pc orders instead of invoicing it per job.
